The Opiana Family was given the keys to their new house during the House Dedication Ceremony on February 20th. This house marks the eighth house built by Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu.

2007 House Completions

Congratulations to the Kaneakua Family
Completion Date: December 15, 2007

Hundreds of volunteers worked alongside of the Kaneakua Family for the past 10 months to build their seven-bedroom home. On Saturday, December 15th the House Dedication Ceremony was will be held to mark the completion of their home and welcome the family of 13 into the community.

“So many community partners have come together to make this dream of homeownership possible for the Kaneakua’s,” said Habitat Board Member, Kealoha Arelliano. “We were able to start and finish this house because of the sponsorship of the five Rotary Clubs of Metropolitan Honolulu, Honolulu Sunrise, Pearl Harbor, Downtown Honolulu and Pearlridge. Their sponsorship helped to buy the materials needed to build the home.”

Other organizations joined in the effort as well. The Schofield Barracks Gospel Church provided a steady stream of volunteers and a delicious BBQ feast on Saturdays. HomeStreet Bank provided funding for the countertops and cabinets. Many employees of Castle and Cooke Homes donated invaluable in-kind services including painting, drywall, and concrete finishing. In addition, community members used their experience as Site Supervisors, Architects, and skilled construction workers to help build the house each Saturday.

“Building this home has truly been a community project but most importantly it has given new hope to this family,” said Arelliano. “For many of these children it is the first time they have ever lived in a house. The family is excited to start this new chapter in their life.”

Congratulations to the Lopes Family
Completion Date: September 8, 2007

Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu is proud to announce the third home in 2007 was dedicated to a local family on Saturday, September 8th.  After a year of working to build their new home with the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Lopes Family of 7 received the keys to their new Habitat home.

Noe Lopes and her family’s journey to building a new home was a long time coming. “We could have never done it without Habitat” Noe says. “It’s a prayer that has been answered.”

Before partnering with Leeward Habitat, their 50 year old house was badly termite eaten and the garage even fell down from the damage. Their family could not live together because of the conditions of the house. Repairs on the old house were not kept up to date and they not afford to make the make major repairs needed on the house just to make it safe. That is when the Lopes Family turned to Leeward Habitat and started the application process. After meeting the family selection requirements the family was breaking ground on their new home in August of 2006.

Since then, volunteers have been coming together every Saturday to help the family complete their home. “They’re so awesome.” exclaimed Noe “We are so blessed to have volunteers like this. Plus, I am learning a lot and he’s (her husband) learning a lot. Now he’s excited because he knows how to fix this and fix that.”

Special thanks to Site Supervisor John Ayat, Walter and Chris of Koinonia Christian Fellowship, Koinonia Christian Center, HomeStreet Bank for donating countertops and cabinets, Dave Luehring, Zak Johnson, Russ Coldwell, Danny Chang, Kevin and the Sand Island Treatment Center Team, Luke and the Oceantics volunteers, Brian Chun, Mary Fisher, and Christine Cipolla.
