What is Habitat for Humanity
Leeward Oahu?
Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu is a local affiliate of a
world-wide organization that builds houses with volunteer labor
and sells
those houses to families in need at affordable rates.
It is our mission to eliminate poverty housing in Leeward Oahu.
There is an affordable housing and homelessness crisis in
Leeward Oahu. With our help, families work alongside volunteers
to build a simple, decent home for
themselves.
Leeward Habitat, the newest Habitat for Humanity affiliate in
Hawaii just celebrating its first year anniversary, is quickly
establishing itself as a champion for fighting the crisis of
poverty housing on Oahu. By building simple, decent affordable
homes with volunteer labor, Leeward Habitat is working to
achieve many exciting and aggressive goals of:
·
Build 4 Habitat houses in 2007
·
Develop a 3.1 acre parcel purchased to build 32 affordable homes
·
Build 50 homes by 2012
Leeward Habitat cannot do this on their own. Community and
business support is vital to making this happen. Please look
through this website and find out ways that you can get involved
today!

How does it work?
Through volunteer labor and donations
of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple,
decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.
Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed
with affordable loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments
are used to build still more Habitat houses.
Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment
and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of
hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their
Habitat house and the houses of others.
How are the partner families selected?
Families
in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates. The
affiliate's family selection committee chooses homeowners based
on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in
the program and their ability to repay the loan. Every affiliate
follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither
race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who
receive Habitat houses.
If your family, or a family you know, is in need of decent,
affordable housing, contact Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu
