Build Day,
August 25th

This
year General Growth Properties announced that they have
teamed with Habitat for Humanity in a three-year
partnership, committing one of the nations largest real
estate investment trusts to contributing materials and
supplies for Hawaii’s Habitat for Humanity homes. Across
Hawaii, GGP is aiming to raise $50,000 to raise awareness
about the need for safe and affordable housing and to help
build homes for families in need in communities where GGP
malls are located. On Saturday, August 25th, GGP held
their “Hawaii Build Day” to help build a home for a Habitat
family by bringing over 30 GGP employee volunteers to donate
their time and manpower for Habitat for Humanity Leeward
Oahu.

Five Rotary Clubs Adopt August 4th
Build Day
On Saturday, August 4th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 25
Rotarians worked to help the Kaneakua family build their house with
Habitat for Humanity Leeward O’ahu. When completed, the seven-bedroom
home will be Oahu’s largest Habitat for Humanity home, and the Kaneakua
family will finally get a roof over their heads. For some of the
family’s children, this home will mark the first time they have lived
under a roof since birth.
“It has been amazing to have the support of these five Rotary Clubs,”
said Kealoha Arelliano, Development Committee Chairman for Leeward
Habitat. “We are the newest Habitat affiliate in Hawaii and basically
starting from the scratch. It’s the community members that are starting
to come together and really get behind our mission to eliminate
substandard housing and homelessness in Leeward O’ahu. Their sponsorship
is making this project a reality.”
Work has been taking place at the Kaneakua house for the past five
months. The house has just recently been sealed up and dry wall
completed throughout the home. On the 4th, the Rotarian volunteers focused
their attention to painting the exterior of the home.

Castle & Cooke Hawaii Helps Leeward Habitat
Build 7-Bedroom House for Family of 13
A multi-generational family of 13, who has been living at a Leeward
Coast beach for several years, will soon be homeless no more.
Volunteers from Castle & Cooke Hawaii, Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu
and the community invested hours of labor during an Adopt-a-Day
into building a new home for the Kaneakua family. When completed, the
seven-bedroom home will be Oahu’s largest Habitat for Humanity home, and
the Kaneakua family will finally get a roof over their heads.
 On
Saturday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 30 Castle & Cooke
Hawaii employees and partners helped the Kaneakua family build their
house with Habitat for Humanity Leeward O’ahu. For some of the family’s
children, this home will mark the first time they have lived under a
roof since birth. The home is being built on a Department of Hawaiian
Home Lands site in Nanakuli.
“When we heard the family’s story of homelessness and the opportunity
for them to build their home, it touched our hearts, and we wanted to
help immediately,” said Harry Saunders, president of Castle & Cooke
Hawaii. “Our employees are looking forward to working with Habitat for
Humanity and alongside the Kaneakua family.”
To date, the family has completed the home’s walls, roofing and
electrical system. Castle & Cooke Hawaii will assist with a variety of
additional tasks, such as painting and sorting materials. The
Adopt-a-Day program, sponsored by Castle & Cooke Hawaii, allows
employees and construction partners to help Habitat for Humanity Leeward
O’ahu provide shelter for families in need. Since many of Castle &
Cooke’s employees are skilled craftsmen, work is expected to progress
smoothly.
