How to Volunteer
If you are planning to volunteer
please
call
the Habitat Office at 808-696-7882. If no one is available to answer
your call please leave your name and information so someone can
call you back. It is recommended that individuals sign up to
volunteer two weeks in advance and groups to sign up four weeks
in advance.
Groups
of 10 or more people that would like to volunteer at a build
site are to schedule their date through the Leeward Habitat
office at 808-696-7882. To find out
more about volunteering as a group and our Adopt-a-Day
options please
click here.Plan to arrive at the Base Yard (87-249 Maipalaoa Road) prior
to going to your scheduled work site.
Click here for
directions to the Base Yard. All volunteers should
report to the Base Yard at 8:00 a.m. to meet the site
supervisors and
go over the agenda of the day. The Site Supervisor will also
give a safety briefing and possibly assign smaller groups to do different tasks
at each jobsite.
The workday is from 8:00am-4:00pm. Volunteers are asked to
stay for at least 4 hours. If you can stay till 4:00pm, that’s
even better! This way, more work can
get done.
The first time you work, you will be asked
to sign a waiver form
and sign in sheet. All NEW volunteers are required to sign
this form. Your waiver form is valid for the current year and
you will only have to fill out one for each year. However, each
time you volunteer at the build site you are required to sign
the Sign-in Sheet. If you plan to volunteer on a regular basis,
please contact the office and let them know.
Volunteers are recommended to wear long pants and sturdy shoes for
safety. You will be walking among construction debris, tools,
weeds, etc. Absolutely NO SLIPPERS! Also, wear a hat and sunscreen to protect
yourself from the harmful rays of the sun. Majority of our
worksites have no shaded covering.
Each volunteer is asked to bring their own sack lunches for
the build day. Water will be provided, however, all volunteers
are encouraged to bring water, preferably personal water
bottles.
If you bring your own tools you are asked
to mark your tools with your name in an area that will not
easily rub off. You will be responsible for your own tools,
please make sure they are accounted for and taken with you at
the end of each workday.
What to Bring
Each volunteer
should be prepared with the following items:
*
Brown Bag Lunch
* Your own Water Bottle
* Closed Toed Shoes (no slippers!)
* Water Bottle or Cup
* Sunscreen
* Hat
* Gloves
* Eye Protection
* Well marked Tools (personal preference: tools will be provided
at the build site)
